Molly Montgomery wants more in her life, so she and her friends Jane and Tara decide to become part of the girl revolution. Molly picks up a few guitar chords by listening to her rock 'n roll idol, Ruby X, and the other two figure out the basics of keyboard and drums, and the become "The Hormones." At one of their first gigs, they meet Dean, a snooty and arrogant yet rather talented boy, who weasels his way into the band followed by his awkward, dreadlock-ed friend T. After meeting Paul, a manager, they sign with his agency Big Black Records, and the band hits the road.
In "Guitar Girl," you get a peek into the secret life of a celebrity, and learn that most bands and musicians aren't just rich and happy, but have lots of ups and downs. They have to make an image for themselves and, the goal is that they have to please their fans, not themselves. When a member of the band starts messing around with pills, it puts out the much repeated message that drugs aren't cool and glamorous, but scary and harmful or fatal, through the eyes of people who struggle with loved ones who are addicted.
The book goes through romance and excitement, addiction and struggle, and the life of a star surrounded by fans, paparazzi, labels, and trying to find yourself in it all.
Recommended for ages 13 and up, for alcohol, drugs, sex, and language.
